Diet / Fitness update
I continue my quest to lose 100 pounds in 2009. My starting stats were:
Date: 1 January 2009
height 6'1 (this does not change)
weight 314.5 pounds
BMI: 41.5 (morbidly obese)

Date: 25 June 2009
height 6'1
weight 239 pounds
BMI: 31.5 (still obese, but moving in the right direction)

75 pounds down; 25 to go! Due to a recent plateau in the 240s, I am clamping down on food intake, and being much more strict about documenting what I eat on my Diet & Fitness twitter account. If food goes in my body (or out, from exercise), it gets tweeted. Understandably, the hardest part is tweeting "cheats". But it is important to track everything!

Also, I have a stretch goal to get to 189 pounds. This would be my lowest weight since high school, and would be just under the "overweight" BMI.

Thanks Niamh! It has been a challenge, but well worth it so far.

Hey man, I know you know this, but don't fixate too much on BMI. I weigh between 175 and 180 and I am only 5'8" (I can't tell you how badly I want to type 5'9" there. Sigh. I digress.). But my body fat % is where I am focusing my attention because I am more concerned with the composition of my weight than what my weight is.

Otherwise, as I already said, your progress in such a short time is phenomenal. I've been killing it in the gym 4-6 days a week literally for the last 3 years and I haven't made comparable progress, IMO, and I know darn well how hard I have worked and how much I have tried to improve my eating habits, etc.

Kudos are well-deserved, for sure.

Hi Justin,

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I was actually going to the gym pretty often before 1/1. What really helped me get to actually losing weight was getting quite strict about my eating. As they say over at Fat 2 Fit Radio, "in the end it really is about calories-out vs calories-in". Of course, it helps if those are lean protein, highly filling calories or high-fiber ones.

Keep up the good work, and you are right that body fat% is important. It is just more difficult to accurately measure than getting on a scale.

That is certainly true! And I definitely step on a scale every morning after I wake up.

You are right about eating. I switched to eating grilled chicken, rice, and and a basic vegetable recently my muscle growth has been pretty impressive during that time.

One problem I do have with eating and with the scale is that my body is pretty sensitive to things like wheat and dairy. This isn't uncommon, of course, and the reaction isn't severe, but it does cause me to retain a few pounds. My scale can literally jump or drop 5 pounds in two days. It's crazy. And frustrating.

It's kind of difficult to get enough protein to support muscle growth if you avoid dairy (protein shakes/bars are almost all milk based)! But eating chicken 3x a day has helped quite a bit. Luckily, I don't necessarily need variety.

And...I'm rambling.
